The CBC is Canada’s voice. Now, the Conservative Party wants to shut it down while billionaires and hedge funds tighten their grip on our media. With the election now underway, and U.S. interests shaping what we see and hear, we must act.
The reality is stark:
Over 70% of Canada’s media is controlled by a handful of corporations, many with ties to U.S. hedge funds (Source).
Postmedia, which owns over 130 newspapers, is controlled by a U.S. hedge fund (Source).
Bell Media cut more than 1,300 jobs in 2023, slashing local news while raking in billions (Source).
Rogers continues expanding its near-monopoly on cable while cutting local coverage.
The Toronto Star is now owned by a member of one of Canada’s wealthiest families—who has no background in journalism.
Social media makes it worse:
X (formerly Twitter) and Meta removed protections against disinformation (Source).
X’s owner has spent over $290 million influencing the U.S. election and is using his personal brand to sway elections worldwide—while even taking on an official role in the U.S. government (Source).
Meta banned Canadian news while misinformation spreads unchecked (Source).
This election could decide whether public media survives in Canada (learn more).
Without the CBC, foreign and corporate interests will dictate our news, silence independent journalism, and leave Canadians uninformed.

Without CBC, Canadian media will be dominated by foreign and corporate interests. The Conservatives want to shut it down, making it easier for misinformation and monopolized media to thrive. Protecting CBC is about protecting democracy and independent journalism in Canada.
The federal government allocates approximately 0.2% of its budget to fund the CBC.
Yes. Despite political rhetoric, CBC remains Canada’s most trusted news source. During key moments, such as the recent tariff crisis, CBC News saw a significant rise in viewership, demonstrating its role as a reliable information source. (Source: Broadcast Dialogue)
Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party have repeatedly stated their intent to remove funding and dismantle the CBC, with Poilievre personally vowing to “axe the CBC.” This would leave Canadian news in the hands of a few corporate players, reducing access to independent journalism and increasing the influence of foreign and private interests over Canadian media.
If the CBC were shut down, Canadian media would become even more concentrated in the hands of a few corporate giants, many of which are influenced by foreign hedge funds. Independent journalism would suffer, and Canadians would lose a trusted, publicly funded source of news. Regional and local news coverage would be gutted, and communities would lose an essential platform for Canadian storytelling.
Over 70% of Canada’s media is controlled by a handful of corporations, including:
Postmedia (majority U.S.-owned)
Bell Media
Rogers
Quebecor
This consolidation threatens media independence and diversity in news coverage, reducing the number of perspectives Canadians can access and increasing the risk of biased, corporate-driven narratives.
The CBC faces funding challenges, political attacks, and competition from digital platforms like Meta and X (formerly Twitter) that are limiting Canadian news visibility. Misinformation and disinformation are on the rise, making independent, publicly funded journalism more critical than ever.
CBC provides news, cultural programming, and local stories that private broadcasters often overlook. It ensures Canadians, especially in rural and Indigenous communities, have access to vital information and in-depth investigative journalism that is not driven by corporate profit motives.

The world seems to be crumbling around us globally. Disinformation and lies are the new accepted norm. Say it enough, and keep repeating, then it has to be true. WWii was supposed to have been our ultimate lesson, never to repeat! ... and yet, here we are. Unthinkable. CBC is a Canadian staple. I trust them more than many other news sources.

CBC is my most trusted news source. It gives the Canadian context of world situations. I also love learning more about Canadian culture, musicians, authors and just folks in their community. Shout out to cross country check up, which gives a voice to everybody.

The CBC is a daily friend of mine. I listen as soon as I get up, while driving and while working on my farm. I listen to the news, interviews and podcasts. Other countries have a national broadcaster, AMF at this time in human history with so much histeria and misinformation, the CBC remains same, steadfast, reliable, open to other opinions and truly Canadian. I prefer the intelligent news over the foolishness served by other stations.

I'm am over 60 and CBC has been an important part of my life for decades. The CBC contributes to our strong Canadian identity. There is enough happening in our world that is so disturbing. We need CBC even more for honest news coverage as well as humour and music shows when we need a mental break from the news. I listen to both Radio One and Two.

I believe that the CBC is culturally important. DIminished content is a result of cuts already. Our family listens every day at some point to the news or an interview etc The CBC needs to stay!!

CBC has been a cornerstone of Canadian broadcasting and news for decades, and I've been listening to it my whole life. Amidst all the craziness that goes on in this world, the CBC has always been the steady voice of reason, considering the issues from multiple perspectives and inviting citizens to share their personal stories of impact and experiences of the larger stories being covered. The CBC is a Canadian treasure and it deserves to be protected.

We need the truth, not the crap the rich use to control and manipulate! We need to hear the stories of the oppressed and the reality of what is going on in the world so we can be better informed and fight against the greed, hatred and corruption in this mess of a world!

We need a Canadian perspective and Canadian content. We are already too influenced by the US. We NEED to keep CBC to have an unbiased, CANADIAN news agency and Canadian shows. We have cancelled most of our other streaming platforms (cost and content). I am one of the “nobodies” that Poilievre says watch CBC. Please keep it!

I am a lifelong CBC listener from a family of same. I trust the CBC to always provide the truth in reporting the news, along with science led information in the best interest of the health of Canadians and the world. I enjoy all the programing and CBC is always on in my car. When we travel, I bring CBC radio and TV with us to stay in touch with what is going on. This is highly important in the new TRUMP era so that we are fully informed on the Canadian situation as we move into troubled, challenging times. Stay strong CBC. We would be a weaker country without you.

I’m supporting this effort because I believe CBC has always been a trusted news source but further to that if our Canadian options for news is reduced to just a few, the threat of controlling what we see and hear becomes greater.
