Help Stop the CBC Shutdown

Canada is in a trade war with the U.S.—we can’t afford to lose control of our news and media.

The CBC is Canada’s voice. Now, the Conservative Party wants to shut it down while billionaires and hedge funds tighten their grip on our media. With U.S. interests shaping what we see and hear, we must act.

The reality is stark:

  • Over 70% of Canada’s media is controlled by a handful of corporations, many with ties to U.S. hedge funds (Source).

  • Postmedia, which owns over 130 newspapers, is controlled by a U.S. hedge fund (Source).

  • Bell Media cut more than 1,300 jobs in 2023, slashing local news while raking in billions (Source).

  • Rogers continues expanding its near-monopoly on cable while cutting local coverage.

  • The Toronto Star is now owned by a member of one of Canada’s wealthiest families—who has no background in journalism.

Social media makes it worse:

  • X (formerly Twitter) and Meta removed protections against disinformation (Source).

  • X’s owner has spent over $290 million influencing the U.S. election and is using his personal brand to sway elections worldwide—while even taking on an official role in the U.S. government (Source).

  • Meta banned Canadian news while misinformation spreads unchecked (Source).

Without the CBC, foreign and corporate interests will dictate our news, silence independent journalism, and leave Canadians uninformed.

We need our own voice now more than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Without CBC, Canadian media will be dominated by foreign and corporate interests. The Conservatives want to shut it down, making it easier for misinformation and monopolized media to thrive. Protecting CBC is about protecting democracy and independent journalism in Canada.

The federal government allocates approximately 0.2% of its budget to fund the CBC.

Yes. Despite political rhetoric, CBC remains Canada’s most trusted news source. During key moments, such as the recent tariff crisis, CBC News saw a significant rise in viewership, demonstrating its role as a reliable information source. (Source: Broadcast Dialogue)

Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party have repeatedly stated their intent to remove funding and dismantle the CBC, with Poilievre personally vowing to “axe the CBC.” This would leave Canadian news in the hands of a few corporate players, reducing access to independent journalism and increasing the influence of foreign and private interests over Canadian media.

If the CBC were shut down, Canadian media would become even more concentrated in the hands of a few corporate giants, many of which are influenced by foreign hedge funds. Independent journalism would suffer, and Canadians would lose a trusted, publicly funded source of news. Regional and local news coverage would be gutted, and communities would lose an essential platform for Canadian storytelling.

Over 70% of Canada’s media is controlled by a handful of corporations, including:

  • Postmedia (majority U.S.-owned)

  • Bell Media

  • Rogers

  • Quebecor

This consolidation threatens media independence and diversity in news coverage, reducing the number of perspectives Canadians can access and increasing the risk of biased, corporate-driven narratives.

The CBC faces funding challenges, political attacks, and competition from digital platforms like Meta and X (formerly Twitter) that are limiting Canadian news visibility. Misinformation and disinformation are on the rise, making independent, publicly funded journalism more critical than ever.

CBC provides news, cultural programming, and local stories that private broadcasters often overlook. It ensures Canadians, especially in rural and Indigenous communities, have access to vital information and in-depth investigative journalism that is not driven by corporate profit motives.
